For LB

During the final selection round of the Explorers Club 50, one of the questions Wan chose to answer was, “Who or what has been your biggest influence?” She immediately thought of “LB.”

For LB

An appreciation post for LB – Lesley Ballantyne from WFA

My biggest influence has undoubtedly been Dr. Lesley Ballantyne, a renowned taxonomist specializing in fireflies of the subfamily Luciolinae. I had the privilege of meeting her in 2010 during a workshop she conducted in Kuala Lumpur, where I was eager to learn about identifying fireflies for the first time. Lesley showcased not only her extensive knowledge but also her patience as she guided me through new concepts and dissection skills. What stood out to me the most was her emphasis on accountability in taxonomy—the crucial importance of leaving a clear trail that others can follow to understand your work. This perspective resonated deeply with me and has shaped my research approach. Over the years, I have had the joy of co-authoring more than ten papers with her and recently, we organized our first hybrid workshop on firefly taxonomy. Lesley’s curiosity and sharp mind continue to inspire me. Now 85 years old, she remains dedicated to solving taxonomic puzzles, (what I would describe as) a commitment to lifelong learning that I deeply admire. I am extremely grateful for the many training and care she provided me for free in her home in Australia for the past 10 years. (I have finally reached a personal milestone: I can identify every firefly species living in mangrove forests. It’s been a long-held dream of mine, and along the way, I have even discovered some new species I never knew existed)!

Lesley has had a tremendous impact on my journey in taxonomy, and her influence has also sparked a deeper appreciation for women’s empowerment within me. Her passion and dedication have inspired me to not only pursue my interests but also to uplift and support other women along the way.

Thank you, LB for the wonderful years and cheers to many more!
